At a Company Dinner

At a Company Dinner

If you are working in Japan, you will most likely be asked to spend time with your coworkers at a nomikai (lilterally: "drink meeting"). This is a good way to get to know the other people in your office a little more causally than a business setting. However don't relax just yet! There are still several socially polite behaviors that you should be careful to observe. These mostly involve food and drink etiquette as described below. In Japan, it is customary that someone else pours your drink for you and you return the favor. The Japanese are very conscious about when your glass is empty, so if you don't want to drink any more, it is best to leave your glass full instead of empty!

Don't take the entire plate to eat yourself

There are a lot of things you should not do with your chopsticks! We couldn't showcase all of them in one blog post, but here are a few you should be sure to remember. Doing these things is generally considered very impolite, so be careful!

Don't take food from the common plate with the end of your chopsticks that have been in your mouth!

Don't leave a tip

In Japan, you do not need to tip like you would in the US. That means waiters/waitresses and taxi drivers do not get tipped, so don't leave one!
